Design

The monitor consists of a 34-inch curved screen, in 21:9 aspect, with discreet edges and plastic base. Its color is black and it has a base with a curved foot, which is very elegant and doesn't get in the way when positioning objects close to it.

At the back of the product are the inputs and connections. This monitor has 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs e a DisplayPort input. LG even sends an HDMI cable and another DisplayPort cable in the box.

There is also a input for headphones or speakers type P2 and power input. Here, I missed a Thunderbolt 4 / USB-C 3.2 input for imaging and charging, since many brands are investing in this connection so that only one cable is used.

Installation: without the packaging, this curved LG monitor has an official weight of 4,9 kilos, and its base can be easily attached to the back of the product, with a simple click. In about ten minutes, you'll be ready to enjoy the screen.

This model has a screen like VA LCD with WQHD resolution (3440 x 1440) and 21:9 aspect, in addition to support for the HDR standard. In simpler terms, this means that it falls somewhere between 2K and 4K: there is no high image quality, but this is not the same as what we see in entry-level models.

The monitor also has the 99% sRGB color range (CIE1931), which is an interesting option for those who work with photo and video editing of the most diverse types, as it respects the true color tone, even on screens with different proportions. .

However, one characteristic of LCD panels is that you will still see a lot of reflection on the screen, which can be annoying if you have a brighter work environment. A screen with an anti-reflective layer would be more suitable to solve this problem, but we are talking about more expensive models, such as the Samsung ViewFinity S9, which was even tested by showmetech.

About Picture Mode HDR effect, it makes colors more vivid and with an interesting fidelity, being the best among all available. Even in brighter environments, you will be able to see the images without tone errors due to the ambient lighting.

Beyond Picture Mode HDR effect, there are more filters that adapt to different usage situations. Are they:

  • Vivid: puts a grayer filter on the image and it may be difficult to see lighter tones, but it avoids high brightness which can be harmful to vision in the long term;
  • Reading: adds a yellowish tone to the image, also with a focus on preventing your eyes from experiencing pain after hours of use looking at the screen, giving low emphasis to blue light;
  • Cinema: prioritizing lighter tones and recommended when watching series and films, with scenes becoming more highlighted. Despite this, this change happens in a simple way, as the monitor does not have a real-time scene identification system;
  • FPS: suitable for games focused on first person. There is a slight emphasis on more yellow tones, which can help when finding enemies in games of Fortnite or other games of the genre;
  • RTS: Improves the color and contrast ratio of the screen and map when playing strategy games (RPG). 3D graphics and messages will also be adjusted on screen to deliver better performance.

I'm a person who works more on the computer than plays, but the LG ultrawide monitor, through its 21:9 aspect ratio, managed to give me a very interesting immersion. The screen's viewing angle can be adjusted from -5º to 15º, which helps with the position of the spine by not having to look down or up. The monitor cannot be used in vertical mode, so here's a tip: consider using it only if you need a model that displays images in a horizontal position.

The screen also has a 100 Hz refresh rate and a response time of 5 milliseconds which, of course, do not characterize it as a gaming monitor, but it does not come across as a bad tool for most of the games available on the market.

And it's worth remembering that it also has support for AMD FreeSync, a feature that adapts the screen refresh rate according to the game being played, avoiding latency and torn pixels on the screen.

interface and apps

Operating system is very simple, but is complemented by OnScreen Control (Photo: Victor Pacheco/Showmetech)

The 2022 or later version of webOS, present in LG smart TVs, would be a great addition here. Instead, we just have a simple operating system that allows us to navigate the system, change image filters, and restore to factory settings. This makes it very dependent on the device you connect.

Going further, it is also possible to have up to two connections at the same time or split the screen to use up to eight applications at the same time. To be able to use the OnScreenControl, you need to download the application on your computer with Windows ou MacOS.

LG informs that the application only works when the monitor is being used as the main screen and it does not work in situations where you choose to just mirror the screen. See the usage example below of two applications on the same screen:

Despite this, the feeling that remains is that LG could have placed its webOS operating system (seen even in projectors), with support for streaming services and even control of connected home devices in the monitor LG UltraWide 34WR50QC-B so that an even more complete experience was delivered.

If you are looking for a simpler monitor, this model could be on your possible shopping list. But know that it will be “just” a second screen and cannot offer more than that. Is it a bad feature? No, but don't set too many expectations either.
