REVIEW: Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700)

Samsung's entry-level Smart TV brings superior screen and audio quality to the category, as well as connectivity and gaming features seen in premium models

The smart TV Samsung UHD 2023 (CU7700) It is a Samsung entry device, but it has several qualities that can make it match the premium models. In addition to bringing all the main streaming applications, we can also play video games via the internet, through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce Now. To make our analysis even more complete, we talked to Alexandre Gleb, spokesman for Samsung. Check out more below.

Design

A few years ago I had the pleasure of buying a Samsung Crystal, but one thing that bothered me a lot was the TV's feet, which were connected to it via screws. However, in Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700), we just need to fit the feet, placing them gently on the indicated portico. Simple and easy. That is, taking into account that you are going to leave it on a piece of furniture, and not mount it on the wall.

The TV is thin, but not exaggeratedly so, which helps a lot when carrying it, even though it weighs just under 11 kilos. The TV control is small and functional, with direct buttons for Netflix, Globo Play and Prime Video, the other services can be accessed through the TV interface. It already comes with its own battery, dispensing with the use of batteries. You can charge it in two ways: via a USB-C cable or via sunlight, thanks to a panel on its back.

Fabric

During testing we used a Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) 50-inch display that features a 4K screen. I watched many TV series like House MD, One Piece, football matches and many other things. Even with a screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz, everything was very fluid and perfect to watch. What surprised me the most were the colors and image quality, much of it thanks to HDR, which leaves the brightness and contrast with a good property.

Image quality is very good. (Image: Ailton Bueno)

And it doesn't matter if the content is in 4K or not, thanks to the Crystal processor, which has a technology that "stretches" the image without any noticeable loss of quality. That is, except when the content is lowercase. The experience with the games was very satisfying too, but I'll talk more about that in the sections below.

Finally, the display also features Contrast Enhancement technology. It does a complete analysis of all parts of the screen and leaves the contrast in the best possible quality.

Audio

One thing I really liked about Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) it was your sound. It features adaptive sound technology, which automatically adapts to the environment where it was placed, in this case my room. The TV has two sound outputs with 20W each, but the feeling we have is that there are more of them, bringing greater immersion. I explain, when I was playing, if something happened on the left side of the screen, you can hear the sound coming from that side.

I also tested how many decibels the TV was capable of, I put two songs: Holy Wars, from Megadeth; It is Fly Away, from GloryHammer. The average obtained was excellent, with 82 points. Personally, I was able to hear even the smallest minutiae of each of the songs, which is great.

One cool thing is that the TV speakers work together with the Samsung sound bar, if this equipment is installed. Alexandre Gleb, TV Product Manager at Samsung Brazil, talks a little about the feature:

A Samsung UHD CU7700 already has a very immersive sound experience, bringing some very cool features such as sound synchronization, which means that the speakers are not turned off when you connect a sound bar from Samsung, making both work together, and the sound in motion. We also have a resource that makes the TV adapt the sound according to the environment where it is exposed, bringing a better sound experience.

Personal assistant

A Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) comes from the factory with Alexa and Bixby. Both can be accessed by voice, via remote control. Thanks to it, we can also change channels or applications, increase and decrease the volume, and everything else necessary to use the TV.

Also, when we use it together with the app SmartThings, from Samsung, we can also control any other electronic devices that are connected to it. We can also use the application itself to control the TV, if the control is far away or out of reach. Alexandre Gleb talks a little more about the Energy Saving feature:

O SmartThings has been updated, and one of the big news is the Energy saving, and now it is possible to register several smart devices on the TV and monitor which products are using the most energy in the month. Like your child's air conditioning for example. This is a pioneering effort by Samsung to bring more sustainability.

Another really cool thing we put in the SmartThings was the automatic connection of your smart devices. Before, it was necessary to add them manually, and today they connect directly to the application, creating a 3D map – but this part is manual –, setting up your home directly on the TV and being able to control everything through a hub.

Interface and Apps

The interface of Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) has the operating system Tizen, with Smart Hub released on last year's TVs. Instead of the horizontal bar at the bottom – seen in models launched until 2021 – we have a screen that divides the section of games, media applications, search, connected devices and settings.

TV media screen image
Adding apps to the media screen is trickier than it should be. (Image: Ailton Bueno)

Despite everything being more separated and apparently more organized, my feeling is that there is too much information on the screen. Some of the most common applications (such as Netflix) are already installed, however others, such as HBO Max, need to be installed and are not located directly in the media section, which is very bad.

For this we need to access the applications screen, then in settings, find what was installed, and then put it on the home screen. Too many clicks for something that should be simpler and easier. Other than that, it works fine, but it takes some getting used to.

The TV also has access to the Samsung TVPlus. The service is present on the device and brings a series of free channels to be watched. Among the many options we have CNN Brasil, Novelando (a soap opera channel), Master Chef Brasil, Turma da Mônica, the series The Shield and many others.

gaming hub

When we connect a console in the Samsung UHD 2023 (CU7700), it recognizes which one is being used. During testing I used a PlayStation 5 with several games, among them Fortnite, Miasma Chronicles e Street Fighter 6. And as stated above, the experience was tremendously satisfying.

In fast games like Fortnite e Street Fighter 6, and even at a refresh rate of 60Hz, there was no “shadow” from the movements on the screen. This happens a lot because of technology. Motion Xcelerator, which makes games more dynamic. Already in Miasma Chronicles, which has lots of particles flying across the screen, it felt like watching a high-quality post-apocalyptic movie. Overall, my entire experience was pretty good. But does not stop there.

Whether gaming on a console, the Xbox app or GeForce Now, the Samsung TV has it all covered. (Image: Ailton Bueno)

One of the great differentials of TVs from Samsung since the 2022 models is the possibility to play the Xbox x Cloud directly on the device, without the need for a console. Just remembering that this function is exclusive to Samsung devices. In addition, we can also play with GeForce Now. So let's go by parts.

O xCloud it's still in beta stage, and it has several servers located here in Brazil, and that makes it work quite satisfactorily — however, that totally depends on your internet. The system itself recommends using the 5GHz frequency of your router, or using the network cable, and any instability can affect the results.

Enquanto or GeForce Now runs directly on servers NVIDIA, to play you need to create an account. In free mode we have few games available, and the one tested was Fortnite, but we only have 30 minutes of gameplay. To enjoy longer you need to subscribe.

No gaming hub da Samsung we can use any type of control. Pairing is very easy, and even playing on Xbox x Cloud, I used a control PlayStation 5 and it worked flawlessly. In both, when I played at peak usage times, around 20pm, the image quality wasn't the best, but still fully playable.

The magic of Samsung gaming hub is that you can use almost all bluetooth controls available on the market. You don't need to have the latest generation Xbox controller, for example, being able to use even the PlayStation 3. This is great, as it democratizes video games, as many people buy a screen and manage to have one Xbox at home, without having to buy outside, not counting the controller and the games.

Adjustable

The smart TV Samsung UHD 2023 (CU7700) fails a little in this regard. We only have 3 HDMI inputs, which already have the technology Anynet +, which allows the use of a universal remote control. Let's say you have the 3 main consoles of today (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S|X and Nintendo Switch), plus a cable TV set. One of them would have to be left off, as there aren't enough inputs.

All cables can be hidden in the TV if you want a cleaner look. (Image: Ailton Bueno)

The TV also has only one USB input, one input for network cables, one optical Digital Audio output and one antenna cable input, with an adapter that facilitates its installation. In addition, the TV also has a Bluetooth 5.2 connection that allows more than 2 devices to be connected simultaneously.

Finally, we have the technology tap view, where you just touch your phone to the TV and it will connect them. With this we will be able to transmit in a mirrored way the contents seen on the cell phone screen, such as photos, videos and anything else you want.

Price and availability

A Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) is now available and can be purchased from our Magazine Luiza store for BRL 2.312,10 in cash or BRL 2.569,00 in 10 installments of BRL 256,90 without interest.

Conclusion

It doesn't matter what time it is, to watch anything is to see as many details as possible. (Image: Ailton Bueno)

A Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700) It is an entry-level model from the company, but it has many features similar to the company's premium models. Its technology is incredible, with a sound system that adapts perfectly to the environment where it is inserted. The panel remains the same as last year, but it is excellent and guarantees a clear and clean image, largely due to the great processor Crystal, which works wonders with small images.

Another thing I need to emphasize here is how easy it is to mount the TV feet, which now just fit and that's it. My caveat is with regard to the installed applications and the difficulty of leaving them on the home screen. Other than that, full recommendation for the Samsung UHD 2023 Smart TV (CU7700).

Alexandre Gleb: If you stop to analyze it, our TV already has a processor that can upscaling to close to 4K, and it is a device that is practically 3-1, since you save money when buying one. Xbox, in addition to being able to stream the GeForce Now and also when picking up a voice assistant. It is quite versatile, not only being a source of channels or streaming, it ends up becoming a hub where we can control the whole house, much thanks to the processing quality and other things that the Samsung it does so well.
