ROG Phone 7 and ROG Phone 7 Ultimate redefine the concept of a gaming smartphone

Took a while, but they are here! In an online event, the ASUS finally made the new ones official ROG Phone 7 e ROG Phone 7 Ultimate for anyone looking for a complete model for games of all genres. As expected, both models hit the market with the Snapdragon 8 Gen2 da Qualcomm and up to 16 GB of RAM.
Without price and launch date defined for the Brazilian market, the new smartphones Android already had their specifications confirmed. See all the details.
Fabric
Starting with the display of the new cell phone for games, the two ROG Phone 7 arrive on the market with a 6,7-inch FHD+ resolution screen and a refresh rate that varies between 60, 90, 120, 144 or 165Hz. A ASUS also confirmed that the screen has support for Ray Tracing, so shadows and darker places can be seen in full quality.

Design
Os ROG Phone 7 will be sold in black and white. Weighing 246 grams, it is also 10,3 millimeters thick and IPX54 protected, which ensures resistance to water and dust ingress. Speaking specifically about the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, it has the same weight, thickness and protections as the simplest model, but on its back, there is a screen that can have different animations in the system. Another novelty is the hot air outlet that takes the name of AeroActive Portal. This allows outside air to enter directly into the processor and other components. The port is activated as soon as the heatsink AeroActive Cooler 7 is coupled.
Finally, both models will be sold with the same cooling system which, in this version, is 168% better than the one present in the ROG Phone 6. It is worth remembering that the 2022 model is sold in Brazil from BRL 9.999.
On the left side, there is a fingerprint sensor that facilitates day-to-day use. It is also possible to access the operating system through facial recognition, as well as other additional sensors are confirmed: compass, accelerometer, ambient light sensor and proximity. There is also a mode in the operating system that can identify key moments in matches and start a screen recording automatically. Imagine that you will no longer have to scroll down the notification screen to start recording your screen at a particular moment, as it will be done automatically.
Temperature Control
Gaming smartphones focused on delivering high performance need to have good heat management and the ASUS knows very well about it. The company has placed a steam chamber that manages to dissipate heat when the model reaches less than 40 Cº and allow the operation of games and applications to run smoothly.
But the great support is in the heatsink that now updated for its seventh generation, manages to manage the hot air and keep both smartphones at ideal temperatures. ASUS confirmed at its launch event that the screen's maximum temperature is 36,5C, while the rear reaches a maximum of 35,7Cº. But that's just the maximum temperature.
Another confirmed detail is that the AeroActive Cooler 7 heat sink manages to maintain an average temperature of 25 Cº in traditional use, but the model also manages to act so that the cell phone reaches only 8 Cº. It is important to remember that the accessory also hits the market with a headphone jack and a new 2.1 sound channel that delivers bass performance at 77%.
Cameras
Both models also share the same set of cameras at the rear. The main sensor is a 766 MP IMX50 with artificial intelligence capabilities. The other wide-angle camera is 13 MP and the third, for depth, has 5 MP.
The lens for video calls is 32 MP and according to ASUS itself, uses “pixel binning to produce an 8 MP image”. As they have the same lenses, the ROG Phone 7 and ROG Phone 7 Ultimate can shoot video in 8K quality at 24 frames per second, as well as 4K at 30/60fps, 1080p at 30/60/120/240fps, 720p at 480fps and support for HDR10+. The front lens records videos in 1080p quality at 30 frames per second.
Connectivity
Both smartphones support networks with the Wi-Fi 7 standard with networks up to 320 MHz (still being popularized) and 5G mobile networks. A Bluetooth 5.3 antenna is also available for wireless handset use.
Battery
Both new smartphones also share the same battery capacity: they have 6.000 mAh and fast charging support. A ASUS confirms that a 65W charger will be shipped in the box for users, next to the heatsink AeroActive Cooler 7.
Another interesting detail is that both models are compatible with Quick Charge 5.0 e PD Charging so that users can make full use of it. The maximum battery life time has not been confirmed, but it is certain that it will be active for a good part of the day for several games to be played.
Internal memory and storage
Gamer smartphones have a good amount of RAM and this would not be different in the ROG Phone 7 line. The models have 12 GB or 16 GB of RAM of the LPDDR5X type, as well as 256 or 512 GB of internal storage.
It will not be possible to place an external memory card, but ASUS hopes that this amount of internal memory will be enough for games of the most diverse types to be installed on both ROG Phone 7.
Operational system
O Android 13 andis installed on the two ROG Phone 7 announced, through the ROG UI. This operating system allows complete customization of smartphones, including wallpaper, icons, ringtones, rest panel, sounds and more.
Updating might be a problem for some users: ASUS will deliver two years of Android update (up to Android 15). Talking about security updates, there is a guarantee of monthly delivery for four years.
Audio
ASUS had its contract with Harman JBL terminated, but that doesn't mean we're going to get low-quality speakers. The Taiwanese company now has a partnership with Dirac to deliver “louder, deeper and less distorted sound”. There is a 12-magnet 16×5mm stereo speaker with Cirrus Logic amplifier.
An interesting technology is that ASUS confirms that its new smartphones can deliver spatial audio regardless of the source: either via 3,5 connection, via USB-C or Bluetooth. And speaking of microphones, three units were inserted that also manage to reduce noise for calls and recordings.
Price and availability
With no release date scheduled for Brazil, the two new smartphones announced are on pre-order in Taiwan and Europe. Check the prices:

It is likely that the new line of gaming smartphones will arrive in Brazil during the second half of 2023. In 2022, the ROG Phone 6 They started to be sold here in November, so we can expect new sales to start only in the second half of 2023.
