With the release of the new film “X-Men: Apocalypse”, which hit theaters this month, nothing more appropriate than doing a recap of all the releases so far. Come on?
PART I: 2000s Trilogy
X-Men: The Movie (2000)
To you. Bryan Singer
In the first film, Professor Xavier's academy welcomes two new recruits: Wolverine and Rogue. Meanwhile, the US Senate tries to pass a law that requires all mutants to identify themselves - an action that leads a radical group of mutants to take drastic measures.
Definitely true to the comics, the mutants' first film appearance was extremely successful.
Not only was a great script conceived, but an exceptional cast was assembled and the sure direction of Bryan Singer - who using his own experiences suffering prejudice, drew parallels between mutants and minorities - worked perfectly.
X-Men 2 (2003)
To you. Bryan Singer
Mutants band together to track down a mutant who tried to assassinate the American president and Professor Xavier's academy is attacked by military forces - led by the insane Colonel Stryker.
It's surprising how superior this sequel is to the first film. Not only is the script even more impressive - even with a lot of corny dialogue, which is worth noting - the effects are much better (the opening scene with the mutant Nightcrawler in the white house is very very well done) and director Synger manages with great skill to direct the different nuclei of the film, without ever confusing the spectator.
An excellent case of the sequel being better than the original.
X-Men: The Final Showdown (2006)
To you. Brett Ratner
A cure is found for the mutant gene, and the US government wants to take urgent action to wipe out the mutants. With this, mutants under Professor Xavier's tutelage and those who follow Magneto enter into combat for the future of the mutant race.
With the departure of Singer - who left the franchise to direct "Superman Returns" - the director's position went to Brett Ratner, who was making success at the time with the "Rush Hour" franchise.
As a result, there was a clear drop in quality. Focusing on the action – and it actually has the most impressive scenes in the franchise – rather than character development, the film isn't as interesting as the previous two episodes.
It is, however, a good dose of the franchise's fan-favorite mutants.
Stay tuned that part II comes out tomorrow: spin-off!
