Samsung creates unbreakable OLED screen

A Samsung announced the production of a new flexible and unbreakable OLED panel, in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories (UL). The title was received after the product passed a series of tests, as UL is the official testing company for several US departments.

Samsung hopes that it will be used not only in smartphones, but also in other electronic products that have a screen, such as car consoles, military devices, portable video games, tablets, among others.

military standard

UL has performed a series of rigorous tests based on military standards defined by the US Department of Defense, to prove the quality of the new panels. In them, the product suffered drops of 1,2 meters about 26 times in a row and showed no damage to the front, back or sides.

Other tests involved very low and very high temperatures to test its strength. The panel also underwent more advanced tests, suffering 1,8 meters, a height higher than the military standard, and still showed no damage.

The panel even survives home tests with hammers, as we can see in the video at the end of the article.

Hojung kim, general manager of the communications team at Samsung Display, said the panel's fortified plastic is perfect for handheld devices not only because it's shatterproof, but because it's lightweight and as strong as glass.

Possible future for Super AMOLED?

Although the new panel is OLED, Samsung has been using a panel with Super AMOLED technology in its smartphones for some time, as is the case with the Galaxy S9, in which the quality of the screen can be seen in our full review. The basic difference between the two technologies is that, while the OLED screen has 3 layers, a cathode and an anode, the AMOLED screen adds a thin film of transistors (TFT) on top of the anode. This extra layer makes the response time for pixel lighting 3 times faster. In practice, this means that this type of screen displays videos with movements more fluidly, without leaving “traces” in the image.

Samsung creates unbreakable oled screen. New unbreakable OLED panel has plastic protection, is flexible and survives drops of up to 1,8m without suffering any damage.

The AMOLED screen is also more economical and has superior color fidelity at different angles. On the other hand, Super AMOLEDs are even better, because in addition to having a greater amount of sub-pixels, thus ensuring more light intensity and different colors, they do not need the glass layer on top of the screen, since they have a layer sensitive to Touch. This makes the device lighter and the touch commands are more fluid and faster. And if AMOLED already saved energy, Super AMOLED increases that savings.

The future of OLED displays

A Samsung uses an unbreakable substrate whose name has not been revealed, adhered to the OLED screen. It will be able to prevent devices from having their screens cracked or broken in drops. This is important, as many manufacturers do not guarantee against this type of damage and the consumer ends up having to pay extra insurance to have this security.

By the way, the Samsung was the main supplier of OLED panels for the iPhone X last year, and Apple has already announced that this year it will be repeated for the 2018 iPhones. We can only wait to see if the new unbreakable panels will be present in the new smartphones that will be revealed soon by Samsung and Apple.
