the online service skype for web, launched last year to allow access to Skype via browser, today released a preview of a new functionality that allows making calls and video calls (individual or in Group) without the need to install a Plugin.
Until now, while it was possible to use Skype for the web to initiate text conversations, join groups and send emoticons and images, when trying to make calls the service required the installation of an external plugin on the machine.
For now, only the Microsoft Edge all with Windows 10 is supported, but the Skype development team says it will make the feature available on Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, as soon as these browsers support the H.264 video codec.

Microsoft committed to adopt the standard WebRTC for web communications and today's announcement is part of that initiative.
Even so, some functions available in the Skype app for PCs and Macs are not yet supported in the online version, such as screen sharing and calls to landlines.
Skype for Web can be accessed via the address web.skype.com or other Microsoft services, such as Outlook.com, OneDrive and Office Online.
