Smart TV: what screen size is recommended for each room size?

Understand how to choose the screen size for your new Full HD, 4K or 8K smart TV, considering the size of the room and the distance from the sofa or bed

To choose one Smart TV, it's not just the price that matters. You also need to know the screen size (in inches), ideal resolution (Full HD, 4K, or 8K), and the distance from the sofa or bed, considering the size of the living room or bedroom. See this guide on how to calculate this:

Why is the distance between the sofa and the TV so important?

1. Man watching high-definition TV with vibrant image and realistic colors.

When the screen is too close and too large, the viewer may notice distortions, pixelation (individual pixels becoming visible) and even feel discomfort or headaches due to having to constantly move their eyes to follow the images. It can even impact body posture. A TV positioned too far away or with a smaller size and resolution than necessary for the distance makes it difficult to see details.

Visual ergonomics experts and manufacturers such as Samsung e LG recommend a distance between the sofa and the TV proportional to the size of the screen and the resolution of the device. For example, for a TV 4K 55 inches, the ideal distance varies between 1,1 and 1,8 meters; already for one TV Full HD with the same size, the recommended distance increases to something between 2 and 2,7 meters, because the lower resolution makes the pixels more visible when close to the viewer

In addition to resolution, the field of view must also be considered. The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE, in its English acronym) recommends that the screen occupy about 30 to 40 degrees of the viewer's field of vision, to ensure a truly cinematic experience. This parameter helps ensure that the viewer can see the entire screen easily, without excessive eye strain. And the more central the position of the TV in relation to the sofa and your field of vision, the better the perception of colors, contrast and sharpness will be.

Screen size x resolution (Full HD, 4K or 8K)

The relationship between screen size (inches) and resolution (pixels) It also impacts the distance the sofa will need to be positioned in the room to ensure the best viewing experience.

It works like this: Full HD TVs (with 1920 x 1080 pixels), because they have lower resolution or image quality, they must be further away from the viewer than TVs with higher resolutions, such as the 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) ou 8K (7680 x 4320 pixels).

Also, regarding size, a large screen with low resolution can result in unclear images, where the pixels on the screen will be visible. On the other hand, a large screen with high resolution (such as 4K or 8K) will maintain definition even at shorter distances.

For example, considering a screen of 55 inches, the distance from it to the sofa should be 2,20 m if it is Full HD1,10m if it is 4K only 0,75 m if 8K (Remember that there are no 8K TVs with this screen size, this is just an approximate comparison). So, here's a tip: the more compact the environment, the more important it is to have a 4K screen.

As 8K TVs, although they are still less common and more expensive, offer such a high pixel density that they allow the creation of giant screens, without losing image quality. For this reason, the smallest 8K TV you will find today is at least 65 inches, like this one Samsung NEO QLED 8K. Although content produced natively in 8K is rarer, this technology represents a huge leap in image quality, and TVs with it do the same. Upscaling or “up-sampling” 4K content to 8K.

Quick Formula for 4K TVs

To make the most of the image quality of a TV 4K, it is important to position it correctly in relation to the sofa. A simple way to do this is by using a quick formula: measure the distance between the back of the sofa and the place where the screen will be installed and multiply this value by 40. The result will indicate, in inches, the approximate size of TV that best fits in this space. For example, if the distance is 1,5 meters, multiplying by 40 gives you 60 inches — in other words, a 4-inch 60K TV would be ideal for this setup.

This rule of thumb works well because it takes into account the high pixel density of 4K TVs, which allows viewers to sit closer to the screen without losing sharpness. The higher the resolution of the TV, the shorter the viewing distance can be, which is especially beneficial in smaller spaces like apartments. This means you can still get an immersive experience even from a shorter distance.

Another way to calculate the ideal distance is to look at the height of your TV screen. Experts recommend that the ideal viewing position for a 4K TV be about 1,5 times the vertical height of the screen. For example, if your screen is 40 inches tall (not wide!), the ideal distance would be about 60 inches — which is equivalent to 1,5 feet. This method is most accurate when you already have your TV model, since it takes into account the actual dimensions of the panel.

Regardless of the size of the TV screen, the idea is to adjust the center of the screen with the user's line of sight at approximately 1,2 m from the floor. (Photo: Reproduction/Fixatek).

Therefore, the ideal height of a TV screen in relation to the floor should be such that the center of the screen is aligned with the eye line of the person using the equipment, preferably while seated. This ensures a comfortable and ergonomic viewing experience, avoiding neck pain and eye fatigue. The ideal height (disregarding the size of the TV screen) for the bottom of the screen usually varies between 1 and 1,2 m from the floor, but the most important thing is that the center of the screen is aligned with the eye line.
