Does a study prove that smartphones cause cancer? Only in mice for now

A study by the US National Toxicology Program found that smartphones cause cancer. The experiment was conducted on mice for nine years.

To really try to find out if the prolonged use of cell phones and smartphones can cause cancer, the The US National Toxicology Program conducted nine years of research and found that there is indeed a link between cell phones and cancer.

The study of US$ 25 million dollars, something around R$ 90,3 million reais, is the largest experiment so far on the subject and was started in 2005. The experiment consisted of exposing around 2.500 rats to radiation in chambers built in underground laboratories. The radiation generated was intended to simulate the networks GSM and CDMA a 900 Mhz and 1.900 Mhz.

Rats and mice were irradiated from the time they were pregnant, continuously for two years, seven days a week, for nine hours each day, alternating at 10-minute intervals of exposure and non-exposure.

At the end of this period, the study found that the incidence of cancer in animals affected by radiation was higher than in those that were not. There was an increase in the number of cases of two types of tumor in male mice. Interestingly, similar results were not found in female subjects.

The study was praised and highlighted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), but support was not unanimous in the scientific community.

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) reports that the correlation, while slight, definitely appears to be causal. Strangely, male mice that were exposed to radiation actually had a slightly higher survival rate than mice that were not exposed.

despite being praised and highlighted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the study did not receive unanimous support in the scientific community.

The World Health Organization and other respondents support the thesis that there is a link between cell phones and cancer, and a WHO spokesperson downplayed the study: “This rat study is under review by additional experts. It is important to note that previously observed human data in large-scale population studies have found limited evidence of an increased risk of developing cancer based on smartphone use.", said the representative.
