Update 14/03 at 10:49: Spotify denied the information given by one of its employees that the Windows Phone application would no longer be updated. In fact, an update will be released today. Read more.
Windows Phone users, who this week had good news related to new applications for Social media coordinator and Facebook) Messenger, were surprised today by the possibility of losing one of the most important apps for any app store: the Spotify.
In response to a user who asked Spotify about plans to update the app to Windows Phone (which hasn't happened since February 2015), a service employee confirmed that "Windows Phone 8.x is no longer supported" and " will no longer receive updates”, although it is possible to use it on devices on which the app is already installed.
However, the attendant also states that “in relation to the Windows 10, we cannot say at the moment se or when a specific version will be released”. The full message can be read (in English) using this link.
The second part of the answer gives rise to the (optimistic) interpretation that although the app for Windows Phone 8/8.1 is outside Spotify's plans, a universal app that supports 10 Windows Mobile could be on the way – possibly converted from the iPhone app, as was Instagram.
Windows 10 Mobile should start rolling out to Lumia devices this month.
For now, Spotify remains available for download from Windows Phone Store, but certainly the news that the application was abandoned will cause dismay among users who invested in the platform and gives more strength to the argument that the Windows Phone is dead.
