Tamagotchi On: new version of the virtual pet arrives in 2019

Those who lived through the 90's certainly remember the warnings of a Tamagotchi. Children learned to love and fear this sound when the Japanese egg-shaped toy arrived in Brazil more than twenty years ago. Behold, the new version, of the virtual pet, the Tamagotchi On was announced by Bandai, this Monday (13th).

Now, the Bandai have a new one "virtual pet" for the new generation in the smartphone age, which stays true to its roots as a single service device, but also includes content with connectivity, for your virtual pets.

The first thing you will notice in the new Tamagotchi On it's the 2,5-inch-high screen, which, unlike the version released in the '90s, isn't particularly pocket-friendly. These increased dimensions compared to the standard 2,25-inch model, bring an LCD screen, an infrared sensor and, yes, Bluetooth, for connection to the smartphone.

The new version is not the first Tamagotchi to connect to a device: in fact, it would be the Tamagotchi 4U, which allows users to download gifts by tapping items such as eggs on their phone or tablet.

You will be able to transfer your creature to the next application of the Tamagotchi On, meet other characters, participate in events and download new content, including a geolocation feature. Unfortunately, the app is not yet ready to be tested.

As a standalone device, however, the Tamagotchi On it is quite complete. The front of the device retains the standard three-button control scheme that works great for your pet's basic functions, which will, for the most part, occupy a nice little living room, dance or have a seizure. depression for not paying enough attention.

There is also the option to buy more rooms, while earning virtual money through activities. You need to feed the little boy or girl, clean up their poop and play with it regularly, and if it needs attention, the device will beep even if you are not handling it.

In addition to this basic repertoire, you can let your pet roam around the city and take them to the park to interact with the game's characters. A visit to the store allows you to buy more rooms to live in, toys to play with and accessories for them to use.

In the shop there are also two games, one where you avoid sharks and get gifts from dolphins, and another where you smash the 'A' buttons as fast as you can to surf. You can unlock other cities to visit, which changes the scenery and allows your pet to find even more species of Tamagotchi.

Even without the app, there's still connectivity thanks to the infrared sensor at the top. You can directly sync two creatures into one "play date“, which brings the possibility to play games or take pictures with each other.

Another novelty is the possibility to send your Tamagotchi to enjoy vacation. One user sends an invite and then the other type of pet puts an “out of office” sign on the screen when it transfers to the other device to take a trip to the in-game resort.

There's a little animation of the two enjoying their time together, then they separate and the two devices go back to normal. But your Tamagotchi occasionally receives mail from her new friend, who sometimes reminds her that they must meet again.

After some time and a lot of togetherness, you can marry your Tamagotchi each other and create generation after generation of adorable pets. However, they have to be old enough to get married. So, don't forget to replace the battery.
