Floppy disk, brick cell phone, typewriter… did you miss me? Check out the latest versions of these and other older technologies

Many devices that were part of our childhood are now considered old and obsolete technologies and have been replaced by more modern and efficient alternatives. As an example of this, we have the Floppy, which gave rise to the pen drive and cloud storageThe cassette tapes, replaced by CDs and hair streaming services, and the touch-tone phones, who gave way to the smartphones. In this text, we have gathered several old technologies and their current replacements to kill the longing and observe how fast technology has evolved. See:

Despite their efficiency, these automobiles contribute to pollutant emissions, which has led to a growing debate about sustainability and environmental impact.

In recent years, the electric vehicles have become the main substitutes for combustion cars, offering a more sustainable and economical alternative. Brands such as BMW, Porsche, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet e Volvo already have models with high autonomy, demonstrating the advancement of technology and the growing adoption of electric cars. In addition, technologies such as fast charging and longer-lasting batteries are making electric cars increasingly accessible and efficient for everyday use.

Cell phones were gradually replaced by smaller, lighter, and more feature-rich devices. First came cell phones with color screens, polyphonic ringtones, and more ergonomic keyboards, followed by the first models with integrated cameras and internet access. However, the real revolution came with smartphones, driven by the launch of the first iPhone in 2007. With its multi-touch screen, innovative design and App Store, which paved the way for an ecosystem of applications, the iPhone redefined the market.

Since then, smartphones have come to integrate multiple functions, such as make calls, access the internet, take photos, listen to music and use aplicativos, all in one device. In addition, they brought touch screens, 4G connection e 5G, cloud integration and several other features.

The first floppy disks were 8 inches and stored only 80 KB. Over time, smaller and more efficient versions appeared, such as 5,25-inch floppy disks (with up to 1,2 MB) and 3,5-inch floppy disks (which reached 1,44 MB and were the most popular in the 90s). They were used to install software e operational systems, save e transfer documents, games and even Backups. However, they were slow, had low durability and were one of the first ways to transmit viruses.

Floppy disks served as the basis for the development of more modern media and were gradually replaced by more advanced technologies, starting with CDs e DVDs, which offered greater capacity and speed. Over time, pen drive e memory cards have become the main options for storing and transferring files in a practical way. For larger volumes of data, External hard drives e Portable SSDs gained space. More recently, the cloud storageas the Google Drive e iCloud, eliminated the need for physical media for many users, allowing remote access to files from anywhere.

A dot matrix printer, also called a needle printer, was one of the first widely used printing technologies, especially in offices and businesses. Recognized by its characteristic noise, it worked by means of needles that pressed an inked ribbon against the paper, resulting, most of the time, in black and white prints.

Over time, dot matrix printers were replaced by more modern models, such as inkjet and laser printers, which offer higher speed, print quality and possibility of printing in color. In addition, the digitization of documents and the use of electronic files have further reduced the need for paper printing. In addition, the evolution of printing technology has led to the development of 3D printers, which, instead of replacing conventional printers, brought a new possibility: the manufacturing of three-dimensional objects in different materials.

In addition, the number of photos was limited, and the quality varied depending on the lighting and the type of camera. Another problem was the risk of losing all the images if the film was damaged or poorly developed. Likewise, VCR camcorders used VHS tapes to record videos and had similar limitations. In addition to having inferior image quality, they were large, heavy and required tapes for storage, without the possibility of immediate viewing.

As digital cameras, which began to become popular in the 2000s, made analog machines obsolete, eliminating the need for films, allowing instant photo preview, real-time configuration adjustments and possibility of storing hundreds or even thousands of images on memory cards. In the case of camcorders, digital models began recording directly onto internal HDs, SD cards or DVDs. However, over time, smartphones have made these devices less essential. A tube television (CRT) was the predominant technology in homes from the mid-2000th century until the early XNUMXs. These TVs were large, heavy, and offered limited picture quality. To get a TV signal, external antennas (or internal) were used to capture transmission signals, either via aerial antenna ou cable. Their role was to capture radio and television waves, transmitted by analog signals, so that the image and audio could be displayed on TV. Antennas could be of different types, such as “collector” antennas, those shaped like “vulture wings” (or parabolic antennas), or the simpler “wire” antennas that captured local signals.

Tube televisions and traditional antennas were gradually replaced by Smart TVs that offer high-definition imaging and thinner, lighter designs. Additionally, external antennas have given way to cable TV subscription services, satellite and most recently streaming platforms , the Netflix, Amazon Prime e YouTube. Most current TVs also have internet access and offer a variety of features, such as web browsing, aplicativos e integration with other devices in the house.
