Education is one of the most conservative institutions in our society. It is enough to observe that the academic model that still structures most schools today is not very different from what it was a century ago. In a world in constant transformation, one of the great questions to think about is the replacement (or at least the reduction) of the graphcentric model, by multimedia resources. In this changing scenario, new platforms emerge that can point to the paths that education should follow in the future.
Some ideas can come from simple situations like the one that moved the Rainforest Salman Khan, a financial market analyst, to create the Khan Academy. It all started in 2004 when one before Khan's youngest needed help with math lessons. Since the girl lived in New York and he lived in Boston, the classes were over the phone. Soon he started helping other cousins and then the idea of record videos and put them on YouTube. That way, it would only be necessary to teach the class once and the cousins could watch the explanations when it was most convenient.
More than a decade later, a user searching for the words Khan Academy on Google, finds about 434 million of results. You almost 4 thousand videos produced by the academy already total more than 226 million views only on its official channel on YouTube. In addition, the official website has a monthly average of 6 million of visitors.
Salman Khan talks about how and why he created the incredible Khan Academy, a carefully structured educational video series that offers full courses in math and now other subjects. In your talk for TED, he shows the power of interactive exercises, and urges teachers to consider reversing the traditional classroom model – giving students video lessons to watch at home, doing the “homework” in the classroom with the teacher available to help. So, what did you think of Salman Khan's ideas? Can Khan Academy nominate one of the futures of education?
