Canon has updated the famous Ishihara Test and makes it available for free on Android

One of the largest printer manufacturers, photo cameras and camcorders on the planet, the Canon, used its technology to spearhead an initiative to help parents and teachers detect color blindness in children in its early stages.

Based on the famous Ishihara test, color perception exam created in 1917, the Canon released “ABC for Colorblindness”, a test print of its machine Canon Mega Tank, which in addition to demonstrating if everything is correct with the printer, also aims to identify in a more objective and light way the signs of color blindness in children.

Color blindness and the Ishihara Test

Color blindness, also known as congenital dyschromatopsia, is a visual disorder characterized by the inability to differentiate all or some colors, most commonly manifested in the difficulty of differentiating green from red. It is a disorder of genetic origin more common in men and in Brazil it affects more than 8 million people. Worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WMO), this number reaches 5% of the population.

To identify color blindness, the doctor Shinobu Ishihara, a professor at the University of Tokyo, in 1917 created the Ishihara Test, which consists of displaying a series of colored cards, 32 in total, each with several circles made of colors slightly different from the colors of the circles located at the ends of the card.

Following this pattern, some circles are grouped in the center of the Ishihara Test card forming a number, which will only be seen by those with normal eyesight.

The level of color blindness, identified by the Ishihara Test, varies according to the number of correct answers among the 32 cards in the exam.
