Reading or listening to the news has always been necessary in everyday life, especially when we have serious and reliable sources. For some years now, the internet has been mobilized by institutions that want to end fake news, that is, the fake news that plague Brazil and the world. In a recent survey in United Kingdom, it was pointed out that almost 10% of adults use the TikTok as a source of news, a number that has been growing over the years.
Ofcom search
According to the regulatory government vehicle Ofcom, from the United Kingdom itself, 7% of adults in the territory use the social network of short videos as a source of information and news. This number can be considered high, when compared to its 1% calculated in 2020.

The Ofcom survey is a collection of information about the consumption habits of the British, which ended up pointing to this growing. TikTok's massive presence in the online world illustrates how the app is rapidly becoming not just another social network for entertainment, but also an informational source.
Data presented
Another example is in United States, which also carried out a similar consumer survey, and which showed an estimated 40% of people who are part of the Generation Z — those born between 1997 and 2012 — who use not only TikTok but also Instagram as a source of information and news. These social networks were even preferred to other media that were previously more used, such as Google Maps and the research itself Google.

Despite this large increase in the UK, the TikTok is still only the sixth most used source of information among young people aged between 16 and 24, representing 27% of that portion. Among other means of staying informed, the survey also presented the following data that relate the information medium with the percentage of its use in the United Kingdom:
- 46%- Instagram;
- 40%- Facebook;
- 36%- BBC One (television channel);
- 35%- Twitter;
- 29% – Application or website of BBC.
Among adolescents between 12 and 15 years of age, the source of information via social networks is even greater. In this group, the most used network is due to the Instagram, with 29% of use by young people, followed by a tie between YouTube e TikTok, with 28%. These metrics are second to two other research sources in this age group: information from their family and the TV, representing respectively 65% and 59%.
It is increasingly unlikely that today's teens will pick up a newspaper or tune in to TV news, preferring to keep up to date by scrolling through their social feeds. And while young people find social media news less reliable, they rate these services more highly for offering a variety of opinions on the current stories of the day.
