Why watch Round 6? Check out the series that is making waves on Netflix

The west has seen a dizzying growth of content coming from the east, more specifically from South Korea. More than 111 million homes were able to watch Round 6 on Netflix, and that means the exclusive production broke all viewership records. But before saying some of the reasons that made the series become this mega hit, let's go back a little bit in time to when this Korean invasion started.

K-pop and Gangnam Style

This was effectively the first time the term k-pop was heard by people outside its original niche. All this being largely supported by the Korean government, which had closed the country and prevented the entry of other cultural products, mainly Japanese. after this tree, many bands began to appear for the western market, such as Big Bang and Girl's Generations, who even performed at major music awards such as The World Music Awards and YouTube Music Awards.

But it was with BTS that K-pop really entered the US market and consequently in other western markets. In 2018, the group won Billboard's Top Social Artist, and with that many other groups appeared, such as Black Pink, Red Velvet and many others.

K-Drama, or the Korean way of doing TV

After the aforementioned cultural closure that took place in Korea, the country was forced to produce its own series to entertain the people. Usually with a single season and full of twists, TV series, called K-dramas, tell stories of all kinds.

With stories that bring from the autistic doctor who wants to help people (The Good Doctor, the good doctor in Portuguese), to the story of a South Korean heiress who ends up in North Korea and falls in love with a local military man (Crash landing on you, landing in love in Portuguese).

And following that line was born Squid Games, or the squid game, or yet Round 6, as it was named in Brazil.

Watch Round 6 or not?

In a simple and straightforward answer: yes. Here we can get to know a side of Korean culture that for us westerners is practically unknown. We know many people who are in debt and who go through various difficulties, including loan sharks, not-so-nice bosses, and even the story of someone who did everything to survive and saw his family being separated.

The basic premise of the series is also in line with what we see on current Brazilian TV. A bunch of broke and penniless people participating in often degrading pranks to gain some kind of help. However, there is a difference between what we see on the show and on our talk shows: everyone comes out alive in our world.

The development of the series, although a little slow, is essential for us to create bonds with the characters. Who has never met someone in the situation of Pakistani Abdul Ali, who left his country with his family to try his luck in another country and ended up seeing his life fall apart. Or with the drama of Kang Sae-byeok, who just wants to bring his family together, but ends up having to do wrong things in order to survive.

Not to mention protagonist Seong Gi-hun, who owes money to loan sharks, has a sick mother, is divorced and saw his daughter taken away from him against her will. Unfortunately, the series is the pure juice of reality, as everyone there has their own problems that can be similar to our own lives or that friend or relative who is important to us.

Also, it's very easy to get annoyed with VIPs who treat everyone and everything like scum, and only their pleasure matters. Another exciting thing is to understand the motivations of the organizers of the games and what their purpose is, in addition to entertaining a bunch of spoiled rich kids.

The Round 6 phenomenon

with everything Round 6 on Netflix has solidified, the trend is to see even greater growth in the K-dramas market. We made a Round 6 full review here at Showmetech, and, at least for me, I believe it is worth investing your time in the 9 episodes that make up the series, even more so because there is an excellent dubbing in Portuguese. Now we can only wait to know when the second season will be confirmed and what will be covered in this sequel.
