We spoke to Diego Oliveira, TV manager at LG Brazil, about “what makes a TV a gamer” and the brand’s new TV portfolio for 2025. Check out the tips

Smart TVs for games are gaining more and more space and LG stands out for, in addition to having a high-quality OLED, also delivering premium features for those who prefer a smart TV instead of a monitor for gaming. The showmetech spoke with the brand's TV manager in Brazil about what makes a model a smart TV for gaming and also learn about the options for 2025.

Diego Oliveira

Diego Oliveira works as a Product Manager in the TV division of LG Electronics. Over more than a decade of career, he has built a solid track record in the administrative and commercial areas, leading multifunctional teams and developing portfolios with a focus on performance and innovation. His role involves everything from defining market strategies to monitoring results, always with an analytical and goal-oriented vision.

What makes a smart TV a gamer TV?

Resolution

Different types of display
(Photo: Showmetech)

To be considered a smart gamer TV, Diego Oliveira mentions that it needs to have at least 4K resolution. It is worth remembering that other features focused only on games are also important, such as upscaling, which improve content with resolution below 4K.

Nowadays, image quality is the key factor for a smart TV for gaming to deliver a good gaming experience. Starting with the resolution, 4K is the starting point.

Diego Oliveira, TV manager at LG Brazil

The resolution 4KAlso known as UltraHD (UHD), refers to a significantly higher pixel density in display screens. While the Full HD (1080p) standard has 1920 horizontal pixels by 1080 vertical pixels, 4K raises that number to 3840 x 2160 pixels, for a total of around 8,3 million pixels. This means that a 4K display has four times as many pixels as a Full HD display, resulting in a picture with much more detail, sharpness, and clarity, especially on larger screens where the difference is more noticeable.

A 4K TV is the ideal choice for gaming because it delivers images with more vivid colors and greater immersion. This resolution has become the recommended standard for exploring the full visual potential of new-generation consoles, such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Size

LG Smart TVs for Gaming
(Photo: Disclosure/LG)

Screen size is also a key factor when choosing a smart TV for gaming. According to Diego Oliveira, as long as the model has the right technologies, screens between 42 and 83 inches are the best choice for those looking to play games with quality on a large scale, making the most of the visual experience without compromising performance.

Today, we have in our portfolio the C5 OLED line, which goes from 42 inches to 83". The 2025 line has been completely updated and can be considered a smart gamer TV, delivering OLED quality. This year, we will also have more launches for the OLED market, in addition to the B5 and G5 series.

Screen size makes a difference in the gaming experience: larger models increase immersion and make it easier to view menus, maps, and important details. However, they also directly influence the price and should be chosen based on the available space — considering the distance between the sofa and the TV to ensure comfort and optimal visual performance. See this table that indicates the size, space between the screen and the sofa, and the environment where the devices should be placed:

TV SizeIdeal distance from the sofaSuitable environment
43"Between 1,06 and 1,66 mSmall rooms or lounges
50"Between 1,2 and 2 meters Medium rooms
55"Between 1,36 and 2,13 meters Medium to large rooms
60"Between 1,5 and 2,3 meters Medium to large rooms
65"Between 1,67 and 2,44 meters Large rooms
75"Between 2 and 3 meters Large rooms or home theater
80"Medium to large roomsLarge rooms or home theater
83"Between 3,5 to 4,2 metersLarge and dedicated environments

Display type

Panels feature different technologies with specific focuses (Photo: Disclosure/LG)

When it comes to high-quality displays, especially for gaming, panels OLED e QENG stand out. By 2025, LG is investing in four types of panels: OLED, OLED evo, QENG e QNED evo. They differ as follows:

  • OLED and OLED evo: These are LG's best display technologies, ideal for gaming. They deliver absolute blacks, vibrant colors, rates of up to 144 Hz and a response time of 0,1 ms, with almost zero input lag. The version evo brings more efficient materials, up to 70% greater brightness and improvements in color reproduction. The result is sharper images, with high contrast and excellent HDR performance.
  • QNED and QNED evo: These are LG screen technologies that combine Mini LED with LCD panels and Quantum Dot technology. They offer high brightness, excellent contrast and more accurate colors. They support up to 120 Hz and have good gaming performance, with low input lag. The version evo brings improvements in local dimming control and optimized brightness, delivering sharper and more detailed images, especially in dark or high-contrast scenes.

Refresh rate

1. Racing cars at high speed during a motor racing competition.
Refresh rate is essential for better experience (Photo: Reproduction/PC MAG)

A refresh rate (measured in Hz) shows how many times the image on the screen is refreshed per second. A 120Hz displays twice as many frames per second as one of 60Hz, resulting in much more movements fluid and clear. This is crucial for games, where superior fluidity enables faster reactions and clearer visuals, giving you a competitive edge and minimizing blur. For general use, the experience of scrolling and viewing action scenes also becomes noticeably smoother and more comfortable.

Diego indicates that for a smart TV to be considered a gamer, it needs to have at least a 120Hz refresh rate, but there are other features that can help reduce “image tearing”, also making a model suitable for gaming, even if it does not have a minimum 120Hz refresh rate.

Response time

Image of a TV displaying a game scene with explosions and fast-moving characters.
(Photo: Reproduction/Arzopa)

O response time (measured in milliseconds) is how fast a pixel changes color. How much less the value, the faster the change. A slow response time causes traces or smudges in fast movements. For games, a low response time is crucial, ensuring sharp images without visual artifacts even in frantic actions, with 1ms being ideal for competitiveness. It ensures the clarity of each pixel in motion.

For a gamer Smart TV, the input lag (delay between your command and the action on the screen) and the allm (Auto Low Latency Mode) are essential.

Um low input lag ensures that your commands are almost instantaneous, avoiding the feeling of lag that can cost you a game.

O allm, in turn, is a smart resource that automatically puts your TV into “Game Mode” when you turn on a console, disabling functions that would cause lag without you having to adjust anything. Together, they ensure that your gaming experience is fluid, responsive and competitive.

Tearing prevention

Example of tearing on smart TVs
Technologies already remove screen problems (Photo: Reproduction/The Verge)

LG Smart TVs launched in 2025 offer robust protection against screen tearing, a common problem in gaming. They feature VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) via HDMI 2.1: for gamers, the VRR is a crucial feature enabled by HDMI 2.1 as it eliminates unwanted “screen tearing” by synchronizing the TV’s refresh rate with that of your device, ensuring flawless images without visual interruptions.

Additionally, models like the OLED Evo G5 are compatible with AMD FreeSync Premium e NVIDIA G-Sync Compatible. This allows the TV to optimize synchronization directly with Xbox consoles or PCs with AMD/NVIDIA graphics cards, preventing tearing and providing a smooth gaming experience, even at high refresh rates (120Hz, 144Hz, or even 165Hz on some models).

HDR & Dolby Vision

In addition to good gaming responsiveness, image quality also improves with technologies like HDR and Dolby Vision. HDR makes colors more vivid and contrast stronger — like when you play at night and can still see what's in the shadows, or when the sun appears on the screen and looks real. HDR10 +, as the name suggests, is the evolution: it adjusts the image scene by scene and is the most used in smart TVs because it is open and freeThis is different from Dolby Vision, which requires companies to pay royalties for its use, which results in a higher final price for the end consumer.

Already Dolby Vision is the direct competitor of HDR10 +. The difference is that it intelligently and dynamically adjusts the image, scene by scene or even frame by frame. While regular HDR sets a fixed brightness and contrast for all content, Dolby Vision constantly adapts. This ensures that every part of the image is optimized for the best possible look, with even deeper blacks and more accurate colors.

Many modern games and consoles, such as the Xbox Series X|S, already support Dolby Vision Gaming, which means that 2025 LG Smart TVs that support this technology will deliver superior visual quality and even greater immersion in your games.

Dolby Atmos

Practical example of dolby atmos
(Photo: Reproduction/Dolby)

For truly immersive gaming and movie audio on Smart TVs, Dolby Atmos e DTS: X are the main technologies that create three-dimensional sound.

O Dolby Atmos, present in models released in 2025, is the most common and essential. It treats sounds as “objects” that can be positioned in a 3D space, including above you. This means that if a sound comes from above in a game, you will hear it from above, increasing the immersion and even giving competitive advantage when locating enemies. It is widely supported by consoles (such as Xbox Series X|S) and streaming services.

Inputs / Outputs

HDMI 2.1 delivers better refresh rates (Photo: Bruno Martinez/Showmetech)

The doors HDMI 2.1 are essential for modern smart TVs, especially if you are looking for the best gaming experience and high-quality content. They are the technological foundation that enables advanced features such as displaying images in 4K to 120Hz (and up to 8K at 60Hz), resulting in incredibly smooth, blur-free games and movies, ideal for the latest consoles and PCs.

O eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel), another feature of HDMI 2.1, allows the TV to send high-quality, uncompressed audio, such as Dolby Atmos, to your soundbar or receiver with just one cable. This ensures an immersive, high-fidelity sound experience without the hassle. Without HDMI 2.1 ports, your Smart TV won’t be able to fully enjoy what the latest generation consoles and high-definition content have to offer, significantly limiting your visual and audio experience.

Lastly, Diego Oliveira Remember that in addition to wireless controls, it is also possible to connect keyboards and mice to smart TVs thanks to the Bluetooth antenna. For those who would like to have greater mobility, this is important, as it allows it to be used as a monitor even in a home office.

LG Smart TVs (with webOS) allow you to connect multiple devices, expanding their use, especially for gaming. You can pair Xbox (One/Series X|S) and PlayStation (DualShock 4/DualSense for PS5) wireless controllers via Bluetooth directly in the TV settings.
