Westworld canceled by HBO and won't get a fifth and final season

The violent pleasures came to an end. THE HBO officially confirmed the cancellation of Westworld. The plot with Evan Rachel Wood comes to an end after four seasons, aired between 2016 and 2022. The decision was considered unexpected, as there were expectations of a fifth and final year for the series. The American broadcaster announced the decision this Friday (4).

The series, which was once considered one of the great pillars of HBO, had a third year that didn't please and lost much of its audience, however. The project has amassed a total of 54 nominations for the award. Emmy (including a supporting actress win for Thandiwe Newton).

Last month, co-creator Jonathan Nolan said in an interview that he hoped the HBO gave the series a fifth season to wrap up the story. "We always planned a fifth and final season.”, said Nolan. "We're still talking to HBO. We look forward to making the last season.”. Co-creator Lisa Joy also spoke out and reiterated that the series has always worked towards a specific ending: “Jonah and I always had an ending in mind that we hope to achieve. We haven't gotten to that yet.".

In a press statement, the HBO said that:

Over the past four seasons, Lisa and Jonah have taken viewers on a mind-blowing odyssey, raising the bar with every step. We are tremendously grateful to them, along with their immensely talented cast, producers and crew, and all of our partners at Kilter Films, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television. It was a thrill to join them on this journey.

Spending cuts wiped out Westworld season 5

According to the entertainment magazine Variety, the main factors that led to HBO making this decision include the high price of the production, as well as the aforementioned drop in viewership. According to the publication, the cancellation is part of a policy of cuts adopted by the company. The idea is to cut costs and save about US $ 3 billion in the next three years. Complementing, the HBO now seeks to make smart investments in other productions, as is the case with The Dragon House, Euphoria e The Last of Us.

Currently, the four seasons of Westworld are available for streaming via HBO Max.
